Clever enlightenment traditions use failsafes. You can get into the path for entirely obtuse reasons, but you'll lose them before the end.

It seems to me like the main point of things like morality training, or Zen obfuscation is to encourage particular stops along the way.

For the individual practitioner, then, the most important question to ask of any tradition is not "does it work?", but "what are my values?"
