It's funny to me when the gig economy etc. is presented as some kind of great social advancement from tech.

Because all I see in it is tech-enabled subversion of systems put in place to protect workers, and the return of older forms of exploitation

This is perhaps unfair. There's maybe something good about being able to find work in your own field from anywhere worldwide.
