How can anyone be liberated who willingly enslaves themselves, then calls that freedom?

Much doctrine gets Satan essentially ass backwards.
It is not the desire for freedom that breeds evil, but the abhorrence of it.

It's interesting how Tolkien, as a Catholic, wrestled with this in his writing.
First, the most abhorrent evil he can come up with is Morgoth, who defies Iluvatar (aka God) out of pride, which Tolkien views as both spiteful and fundamentally evil.

But then, the idea evolves into Sauron, essentially an idealist reformist who becomes so consumed by his own desire to order all things as he deems it best, that his evil eventually eclipses that of Morgoth.
An interesting bit of heresy, that. And revealing.
