Sometimes theoretical best practices are illuminating, not in an economics sense of "you idiots can't possibly think this makes sense, can you?", but in the realization that nobody but nobody in the field concerned ever actually does the thing.

It's not so much that the field doesn't have any functional ideas as that the functional ideas are often forsworn in favor of utterly nonsensical dogma.
