Yes, but I suspect the rot here is much deeper and starker than that. It is like the spike in gas prices predating the Ukraine war and sanctions pandemonium: there is a total void at the top. It devours light. It provides nothing, and allows nothing else to shine.

The inability of so-called "lawmakers" to actually enshrine in law any of the things they wish to carry out is another example. Executive overreach into retractions and apathetically phrased half-apologies amidst ruinous lawsuits is just another feature of the covidian West.

From my home country: Norway wanted to restrict travel, so they attempted to pass a law that infringed on multiple constitutional rights, as the basis of a practice that carried on long after said law was amended, and is now in court being sued for barring entry to EU nationals.

There were multiple pathways that could have been taken to achieve the desired results, but they went with the most arbitrary authoritarian approach they could think of and introduced a totally fatuous collection of exceptions that rendered any desired effect irrelevant.
