Was a time when slapping a man for insulting your wife was actually common behaviour and more or less expected and accepted. (up to at least early 60s.) A time before that it would have caused a duel with a good chance of death.

also a lot of people are saying it was a punch, it wasn't and the difference is important. A slap is both less likely to do real damage and an insult.
