Every time I do the least bit of research work for my writing, I realize that I've entered a trap, that some kind of secret compact has been formed.
It is a living thing. And it has its own desires, its own goals.

Do writers actually come up with any of their own ideas, or is it just muses all the way down?

I think I do at the start, but once things get going the latter feels more true. Granted, I haven't written anything beyond a page or two at a time in years.
