People talk about Tumblr culture a lot. I think one of the most corrosive sides of this culture has been this traumacore obsession with denigrating one's biological family. Deliberate abuse is very real, utterly destructive, and much rarer than wounded teenagers tend to believe.

Meanwhile, this materialistic obsession with treating family as disposable and somehow illegitimate will be destroying lives in utterly predictable fashion for a long time to come.

People who are engaging in aesthetic performance as part of a subcultural clout thing are neither honest counselors nor true friends. Meanwhile, while a few of us have been truly unlucky with our birth families, most of them genuinely care, no matter their faults.

That is exactly the position most of us are in, but I meant "deliberate and/or schizoid abuse," not "hurts your feelings by being flawed and sometimes an asshole".

There are people who have been pimped out, subjected to regular beatings or unremitting daily emotional abuse by mentally ill and/or malicious parents. "Daddy doesn't understand my feelings," is a real problem most of us have, of about two orders of magnitude less significance.

It's not about minimizing people's real problems with their families, though. It's about understanding that an entire subculture feeding people bullshit narratives that most or all families are totally irredeemable is enormously damaging and also complete bullshit.
