Haven't spent enough time looking into Osho to understand his story in full, but his denial of responsibility for his followers' crimes as "well, actually it was the psychopath I hired to run my organization who did the crimes" is a illustrative of the failings of the guru model.

The guru is (supposed to be) responsible for getting you enlightened, but generally takes so little interest in worldly affairs, they're likely to leave the ground-level situation in a totally untenable state.
Not to mention the lack of interest in fixing their own psychology.
