Any kind of personal growth that involves a loss of attachment to old comforts is in some way going to suck. Without that particular cope, there is just the vista of stuff it was helping you (not) deal with.

If you for some reason can avoid just dealing with things in some isolated, personal manner, then maybe it is not so bad, but this is rare. Best to prepare for the downside, since the upside is waiting somewhere past, or rather through, it.
