I think Democrats underestimate and overestimate their electorate simultaneously. They think they want (fake) substance and (fake) policy commitments, when really they want live wrestling. The mistake they make is removing suspension of disbelief by making the script explicit.

All non-direct democracies have problems with accountability and politicians just doing what they want after being elected. But if the election process itself is a sham and a lie, there is really no point discussing these things even as problems of democracy.
