One of the most important skills you can learn for convincing others is that you need to build & maintain trust. Nobody cares about how much you've practiced rhetoric in a direct conversation. They want to know you respect them & care about their opinions.

By contrast, I've had a fair few vegans (proximity issue) reduce my dietary choices to not caring about/being ignorant of animal welfare. If someone engages with you adversarialy or condescendingly without taking any time to learn your position, it's totally fine to ignore them.

We judge people with different backgrounds, experiences, social environments and so forth as if we aren't also shaped by the same. Then we think this makes us especially wise, cool and insightful, while in fact we are displaying exceptional ignorance.
