One of the most important skills you can learn for convincing others is that you need to build & maintain trust. Nobody cares about how much you've practiced rhetoric in a direct conversation. They want to know you respect them & care about their opinions.

By contrast, I've had a fair few vegans (proximity issue) reduce my dietary choices to not caring about/being ignorant of animal welfare. If someone engages with you adversarialy or condescendingly without taking any time to learn your position, it's totally fine to ignore them.

Absolutely not saying you can't fight people or positions. Just that people confusedly fight others they would like to convince. It's like a kid who wants you to join their game but hasn't groked how to ask nicely, so they hit you for attention.
