People who are not trained actors tend to improvise poorly when asked to do an impromptu performance in front of a hostile audience.
A lot of apologies may be false, some may be sincere, but all of them will feel forced to anyone who feels the need to engage in them.

Crucially, though, you don't need to be dishonest to engage in bad acting. It's enough to simply not know how to act on a scene.
What do I do with my hands? What words do I say? Where do I look? How do I breathe?
There are plenty of online writing-equivalents of these problems.
