The only way I know how to talk to angels is to accept that you're already in hell.

Psychedelic drugs, ritual and rites of passage, social ostracism etc. all lead towards particularly excruciating styles of life & experiences.
You *need* this in order to experience spirits as real.

Accidental events like near-death experiences and neurological damage can also put you in this frame, but are obviously not too scalable.

I still wouldn't recommend it at random.
Effective, yes, but there are more than one kind of spirit world to experience.
No guarantee people will come back whole, or remotely sane.
