One of the most amazing qualities of Twitter is that you can have people following you who are so caring, they'll drop in to offer support in a crisis. And you can have some person who has randomly interacted with you a few times over the years start a flame war over nothing.

But the basic premise is fairly easy to follow: At almost any follower count, you'll have people there who will be genuinely curious about you. And people who want you to fit their projections or clicked follow one time because they saw a retweet or something. Keep A, shed B.

I used to have some neuroticism over follower counts, but stopped giving much of a fuck after I realized I only come to Twitter because of certain people. And those people couldn't care less about some random nonsense on my timeline. They know why they're here, even if I don't.

I follow and unfollow constantly, but have plenty of people whom I strongly disagree with on any number of things and have followed for years. This is normal, I guess. It's a strong relaxant to know this, at least for me.
