Here's a more pertinent question: is the US more or less respectful towards its citizens and their rights than, say, Turkey? I'm agnostic on this one, and I don't think Americans have any particular reason to complain about that stance. So why should we treat them differently?

Does that make it worse than, say, France, which has willingly participated in most US wars, has foreign colonies and is willing to abuse its own citizens on behalf of gulf states oligarchs living on Champs-Élysées? Well, maybe, but France still sucks. And is far from alone.
