I already knew back then what the US was (all foreign kids know). What stuck with me was the impressively deep commitment to hostility. Merely being associated with a French flight'd get you harrassed, for the vaguest aesthetic association with not being a bootlicker.

Because they are. And they will only keep getting worse elsewhere, too. Enforcement is always ratchetted up during collapse, to protect looting elites. It keeps escalating until they stop being able to pay all their idiot pigs. Then *they* start rioting.
