trying to let go of the habit of identifying as some sort of stressed out ghost that lives directly behind my eyeballs

Hm. Been a while since I could do this effortlessly. 7ish months ago I'd habitually just move centers of awareness.
Do this for a while and you start freaking people out, though. It's like going through multiple social masks per conversation.

How do you even do it effortfully???
How is this even possible?

Attention is like balance. You can train yourself to be conscious of it, but most of us operate it without much awareness.
Just like with balance, you can alter your center of (attentional) gravity. It takes some practice, though, for most of us.

If you can identify the way it feels where you have centered most of your attention, you're halfway there.
It may be behind the eyes like in the example mentioned earlier, but may also be for example somewhere in the body that feels very painful or pleasurable.
Moving it around comes from picking out the sensation of centeredness (as separate from thoughts, pain or pleasure sensations etc.), and then allowing that to move.
This feels very much like shifting your balance. It can even cause you to shift your center of balance as well.
