I mean, I know people are lazy - but the ease with which we block out any information that would force us to learn something is pretty impressive.

It's not even about being lazy, more of an expectation that "These people have been trained to do this. They must know something that I don't."

I'm not implying this is particular, personal laziness, as much as that our brains filter most info and labels even the simplest explainers as technobabble. Doctor: "So you have no elevated blood pressure and your temperature is fine, so it's not-" Brain: "Doctor mouth go blah"

E.g. I tend to forget most of the interesting stuff that comes up when I'm on acid. I think this is less about serotonin, more that working memory can't cope with the information load. Our information processing is symbolic but we perceive it holistically. It's lossy as hell.
