The most important thing to understand about the people running most (not all) Western nations is that they are a combination of narcissists, sociopaths and straight psychopaths.
Anyone expecting them to do the right thing for the right reason is living in lalaland.

Yes, when I write longer pieces I say "functional sociopaths".
Might not meet the clinical designation, but they act like sociopaths.

Fully agreed. Sometimes, they even act worse. Twisted scruples tend to encourage creepier behaviour than the absence of scruples.
