Being any sort of public person today is obviously insanely corrosive to your sanity unless you're extremely well-insulated. I'm wondering to what extent this is cultural and not a human constant, though. The Romans were another winner takes all culture with ludicrous standards.

One of the good bits of archaeological evidence from that era being murals of prominent politicians being mocked mercilessly is pretty Twitter-esque. Is this a through line for all civilization, or a norm when social circumstances produce a vast excess of losers?

(Should probably mention that being enclaved off from the general public is its own form of trap, albeit not of the same type.)
