Nonzero amount of people did actually love it. I had one guy who hated me because the entire guild would laugh at him when he tried to retaliate.
(He wasn't very good at talking shit; too touchy. I had none of those issues.)

We had people who told me to go fuck myself, people who laughed at me, people who said they respected me but hated me, people who said they hated me but respected me.
For as long as I was taking it waaay seriously, though, we had great emotional engagement.

Reading about it in a book about charisma years later, I was doing entrainment (or whatchamacall it) 101: getting everyone into an elevated emotional state so they'd be checked in when it counted.
Being an uppity little shit was a surprisingly effective leadership strategy.
