This seems true but I don't get why it would be true and my only retconned explanation is that truth comes from deep engagement with the world, each person has their particular deep engagement therefore etc

No one starts a wildly successful religion without having a fairly high level of spiritual attainment, a somewhat reproducible method for passing the practices on to others, and an emotionally/mythically resonant way of explaining stuff.

Someone will inevitably say "but wasn't <such and such religious founder> an awful person, though?"
And this is when you know they have some hard lessons about spiritual attainment coming their way.
