When I was little, I learned that like 100,000 people died daily. I was seriously disturbed by this, but nobody around me seemed upset. When 9/11 hit, my parents told me 3,000 people died, and I was like "but 100,000 people died today anyway, why are you so upset about only 3k?"

unexpected deaths are much worse because they're much more disruptive to everyone's expectations; i don't know why nobody says this but it's obviously true and obviously relevant

Not just unexpected; Breivik killed 100 kids in Norway, and I was personally within 2 degrees of separation of people who had lost family to him. It's pretty disturbing how callous we are about deaths that don't affect us personally, but these things really actually sort of do.
