Frequently, therapy into meditation is a recommended trajectory if you want to hit some of that "self-knowledge" juice without going nuts.
I'm finding myself going meditation into therapy at the moment. Because I was already nuts. Meditation just made it easier to recognize how.

Therapy is a pretty risky endeavor, though.
Lots of labeling (I'm using 'nuts' facetiously, but I'm talking full DSM bullet point lists and associated drugs, here), not a lot of effective help.
You need to know your way around that territory, too. There be dragons everywhere.
