Favourite version of this at the moment is all the Gen X-er memes about helpless Gen X being squished by narcissistic boomers and millennials. I mean, sure, the population has been trending more narcissistic for decades but surely it must have skipped a generation...

Vulnerable narcissism, yes. My favourite. Public perceptions of narcissism are mostly so far off kilter that they're not even worth bothering with. We have seriously confused (and ironically narcissistic - as in self-absorbed, low empathy) notions of what NPD is like.
