I try to imagine what sort of mentality it would take to be so pathetically eager to ignore or dismiss children. And then I realize that is a very common mentality. 1) File under 'Nazis are ordinary people, too.' 2) Despair.

This is almost-but-not-quite in the same category as educated Westerners framing our democracies as the spiritual ancestors of Athenian democracy. (Which, taken at face value, is actually a fairly grim critique of democracy itself.)
