I have chosen to completely ignore all news about the US/China trade war(?) to test the hypothesis that actually I don’t need to care
Kinda hoping that eventually I’ll disregard current affairs entirely and only develop opinions on things with a 3-month lag

“Visa did you read about the Dutch euthanasia thing,”
Nope. I’ll read about it next month maybe if anybody’s still talking about it then

How long have we spent in the past ~5 years in passionate arguments that ultimately amounted to nothing? What could've we done w that time?

Will you care about it in 3 months?
If no, why care about it now?

I was thinking about this this morning since somebody retweeted it, and I'm positive the function of all this opinion-mongering is purely sociological.
There isn't much of a personal dimension to it, because it isn't even meant to be personal at all.

yeah it's a whole crowd people following a crowd following a shadow on the wall
it's fine if it's what you want, but I don't think many people choose this in an intentional way
I think we can lead more interesting and exciting lives by being intentional about this

also there are opportunities to use these shadow festivals for personal gain, profit, amusement, etc if you have a clear sense of who you are, what you want, what your goals are, what you're going after, etc. the energy of the crowd can give you a boost but you have to be clear

'A boost' is putting it v. lightly.
Most of personal charisma is leveraging other people's emotional energy in various ways.
But yes, crowds are fickle and this is a dangerous game to be playing at scale. Standing at the fulcrum when the energy flows with you vs. against you...
