Serious question: Do you need to reach a jhana for this process to happen? Or will any meditation session do it?

This is more of an insight thing than a concentration thing. Goes in stops and starts, cycles, spirals, waves. Any or all of those things.

The ability to focus sufficiently to reach jhanas is a benefit, but not the way.

Another reason to cultivate jhanas is that it helps with the tempering, and the sheer onslaught of experience.
I have extremely low latent inhibition after my more recent breakthroughs. Without the ability to zoom in and concentrate, I'd most likely be going crazy.
