Working out how to explain the purpose of combining meditation practices with different focus areas. I think the Theravadan framing is pretty good, but... somewhat lacking? And I don't think vaguely ascribing Reasons is good enough. This is all very straightforward.

Combine three core practices (concentration, insight, emotions) to stabilize the practice, draw it all together and provide an overall structure. But combining any two practices will also produce a distinctive set of effects, which are contextually useful/superior.

Doing extensive work on emotions when your life is already forcing that upon you, for example, is a recipe for disaster. Concentration practices help calm you down. These are often good to prioritize when things are not going so well.
