Beginner meditation: "Oh, let's try that thing again."
Early meditation: "Eh, guess I'd better meditate again."
Advanced meditation: "Oh that's funny, I'm having meditative experiences without trying to experience it."

I've been at it for over four decades. And, no kidding, sometimes nowadays I find myself meditating in my sleep.*

*Old School Buddhist jhāna absorptions, which unfold in a set sequence; I've sometimes awoken at night in the middle of the sequence.

In phases of intensive practice.. no such thing as sleep, just the body lies down to rest. Sometimes it even feels like I'm still sitting up while that happens. The space buzzing & vibrant.
The distinction between inner life & outer world has become very transparent.
