so, in my case, there's a core of peace & acceptance of this mortal coil that remains untouched. but the monkey's chatter is a cacacophony of ever darker distraction.

By "core", I guess you aren't referring to any sort of thought content per se?
So would you say the chatter originates in a part of you that is not at peace with your inevitable death?
