Pretty core in-universe reason for the War of the Ring even occurring is that Sauron was scared to go home when he was offered redemption. So yeah, if fucking Sauron can be redeemed...

Like, of course he thought that Sauron or even Melkor (who was way worse than Sauron) could be redeemed since he was so incredibly Catholic that he thought anyone was capable of redemption, which is why he regretted his decision with orcs!
