Maybe people confuse autonomous processes with "choices" because said processes play out with all this mental chatter.
"Should I do that - but what if this happens, and what will they think?"
Yet, your mind can be totally empty of this chatter and still you'll do things.

Without constant chatter, complex tasks are easier as stray thoughts don't distract.
Physical movements become more fluid as discursive thought works against embodied concentration.
Choice becomes easier as you have very little filtering on your feelings.

Thoughts are extremely useful mental tools and not to be discarded, but constant mental chatter is just noise.
