One thing I will never understand about Westerner meditators is how eager some are to ape renunciate paths and their received wisdom. I know exactly one meditator who has renounced much of life, and they have good reason. Are any of the rest of you going to renounce? No...?

Then why the fuck act like it's even an interesting modality of practice for more than one person in a hundred? Or worse, that it's the only worthy modality?!? Nimrods.

It can't be an accident that the most fervent proselytes of renunciation-while-alive-in-the-world come from communities blighted with rape claims. Public shaming is a primary tool of the abuser, and that stuff gets internalized quickly by most victims.

It's not that renunciate paths are per se bad. It's that they're often not appropriate for Westerners, and predators frequently teach us corrupted versions.

This is...the saddest thing I've read in a while That eagerness is surprising though. Renunciation doesn't seem outwardly exciting at first glance, wondering where the strong appeal is. Maybe it's exoticism that draws people in? But for something pretty harsh and demanding...

It's aversion. Trauma-pain, disappointments, shame, the baseline suffering of existing. Catholicism works on similar principles. Renunciation is a worthy practice. But it's explicitly not about living in the world, and yet that is where most of our practitioners are.

Ah and the cycle repeats... I actually think Christianity in its pure, initial state can also be a worthy pursuit, renunciation can be good for those who are suited...but it's been used as a self-harming tool for centuries in the west. People twisted and ruined it for themselves

Give a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Gift men the secret of fire, and, well, uh...
