more significantly, when I see people responding like "wow wtf is wrong with that guy" on news articles etc, I always feel/think "... I am more like that guy than you"

To be honest, I'm never convinced that any of us (including myself) getting morally outraged about shitty behaviour aren't exactly like that.
Exceptions for genuinely monstrous behaviour, perhaps. But we're all sort of assholes in some way.
