hm this seems to me to be correct I don't think the two are mutually exclusive; much of my irony posting is meta-sincere

Irony is defensive, sincerity is offensive. Irony makes it hard to pin down someone’s position and thus to attack them. Sincerity furnishes the moral justification that allows someone to go on the offensive. It also often offends.
