I long ago stopped crediting most people with many more critical faculties than the average chimp.

I am thinking more about intelligent people who can't accept that people in authority do despicable things. Its a defense mechanism. I can literally watch their eyes blink off, when they start to see it.

Yes, but that is what I mean. Critical faculties not as in IQ scores, but the ability to critically evaluate your beliefs.
Even people who are remarkably good at this are still terrible when measured by any objective criteria. Most people are a lot worse even than that.
