One minor pet peeve I have is programmers/coders calling themselves engineers. Engineers build/design something which is more than code.

This feels iffy.
I'd think the main thing is that a lot of coding is essentially just busywork for designers. Feels a bit perverse to call that "engineering".
OTOH, I don't see which part of coding the software for e.g. a flight control system *isn't* an engineering problem.

So sounds like we agree software engineering is a thing!
(But also that a lot of people with "software engineer" in their job title are really more like software technicians for the purposes of the analogy.)
