I've known many people who struggled with NPD and BPD (borderline personality disorder). Don't know if "personality disorder" really fits the nature of the struggle, but I digress. Borderline is pretty much just narcissism without blinkers, though: "fuck, everything hurts!"

So I think because of all this, people are prone to conflating normal expressions of human primate joy ("Look at this cool thing I did!), with narcissism ("Look at this SHOW I'm putting on, no, not the closet, no, get away from there! You bastard, you fool! You are so dumb!")

So , since you asked, I think your frame was essentially true in recognizing that "self-image, self-exploration = positive" is not narcissism, but could go further in delving into how, precisely, it is "narcissistic" to *not* explore or value your own being.
