I'd say purge is more accurate than genocide, no? Most were politically motivated (not a ethnic, racial, religious, or national grouping), even if loosely and opportunistically, & I can't think of any other instance where less than 30,000 deaths was labelled a genocide?

Indeed. Just because the victims were often rich & it happened in the space of a couple of years, it's portrayed as uniquely horrific. But the death count & persecution of the ancien regime, stretching back hundreds of years, absolutely dwarfs it. But we don't hear about that.
