Can only imagine the bleh of the freelance dev churn.
Small businesses (well, project managers) act like I've shot someone in front of them when I tell them I charge 30 dollars/hour for a normal, nontechnical translation.
"What, you want OUR money? For YOUR work?"

The essential issue rarely seems to be, as translators are wont to assume, that PMs think that translation is unskilled work.
Rather, they're just so used to underpaying their staff that, when someone else wants to be paid anythin' reasonable at all for their skills, they fume.

friend of mine was the union leader for Canadian translators in the 70s. When then PM Pierre Trudeau needed translation to repatriate the constitution, he took the union on strike.
Got the concessions he wanted.

Think we need a bit more than that if we don't want to be eating each others' thigh bones soon after...

(In totally unrelated news, Norwegian authorized translators can easily earn 600kr+ for less than an hour's work. Those guys have a union, ofc.)
