It was a stupid and unnecessary comment, even as it's also just a fact that many Poles did collaborate.
But stupid and unnecessary comments of the sort are absolutely necessary to make as part of this sort of politics.
Polish ministers constantly do the same.

So it seems more or less inevitable that, as the political compass keeps tilting right, we will have complete snowflake diplomacy.
Everybody needs to be rude to someone to keep their story going. Everybody needs to be easily offended to defend their national pride.
