And all the same, our fictions tilt heavily towards dystopias..

All the way into the present, our utopian fictions tend to be either ironic or deeply mistaken.
That's a line you can trace all the way back to Thomas More, and probably a lot longer.

I tend to think this all tells us something very fundamental about the world we live in, but that's just me.

I think optimism is an American thing. I dont think the grand sweep of humanity across the globe is characterized by optimsm.
