I think the real fear (of the political and business classes) is that pulling out of NATO will make Europe, correctly, think "so what do we need the US for, anyway?" At this point, NATO is essentially just a justification for keeping trade in USD. If it goes, so does that.

European politicians get to spend near 0 on defense, and gamble that it will be someone else's problem if there's a war. The US trades military power and domestic prosperity for influence.
