sounds like you are part way in the process and not stuck in a good place. It's generally acknowledged that some parts of the process are shit and that you can get stuck there for long periods.

however, awakening is largely a matter of "letting go". When I let go of thinking of my personality as me, for example (a genuine awakening) it opened up the possibility for a lot of personality change, made me tons happier, etc...
anything you either try to push away or pull closer/cling to will tend to be very hard to either get rid of or change. Attempts to get rid of bad stuff are interpreted by the mind as "this is still important, better keep bringing it up." (The Mind is kind of an asshole.)

Ok, serious comment: you weren't doing any vipassana-esque practice?
I've been stuck on highly realized concentration practice. Not *as* realized as you're describing, but the problems were identical.
Sounds like you did what I did: delved too deep without shoring up other, necessary skills.
I think some traditions do the same, but they tend to come plastered with DANGER: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
