Communism speaks for itself. Then the US and EU teamed up to raid the industry & resources, bribing off the leadership (who willingly did this to their country).
Then it becomes NATO outpost, and thus target, nr. 1.

It's infuriating to talk to most Polish people about this.
They tend either to support "what is reparations" Germany talking points about Polish brutishness OR a carefully constructed fantasy land in which Poland is the Last Bastion of White European culture or some such BS.
