One of the most annoying things about being an emigrant is that you're constantly met by people who assume you know all the implicit social rules. It's been years and I'm still learning weird particulars of Polish culture all the time.

Can't imagine how obnoxious this must be in Norway, where people just assume you're being rude and withdraw socially without explanation. At least Poles occasionally yell at you, whether they're the ones breaking social rules or you are.

(A secondary issue is that the expected vs. displayed respect for social rules is massively out of sync in this country, which makes certain rules very tricky to deduce since they boil down to "I get to be an asshole, but these other fuckers...")

The best way to handle this situation, reserved for really obnoxious cases, is to just spout a lot of very angry-sounding generic Norwegian. Translated, looks like: "WOULD YOU LIKE SOME FISH? HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR SHOES RECENTLY? YES, I HAVE A DOG."
