is it better or worse if the most traumatic incident in your life turns out to largely have been caused by a misunderstanding? eg say your parents had a bad, messy, ugly divorce... and it turns out 5 years later that mum thought dad did something that he didn't actually do

No. Speaking for myself, it would not be better nor worse. It would also be pretty much impossible for it to have been a misunderstanding, so there's that...
